Tesla is expected to launch Robotaxi-branded autonomous vehicle rides in Austin, Texas this month in a 'pilot' launch with around 10 vehicles initially.
The service will be by invitation-only with teleoperators overseeing vehicle operation to ensure safety, similar to Waymo's approach in Austin.
Tesla plans to use consumer vehicles initially before transitioning to purpose-built cars called Cybercabs that have no steering wheel or pedals.
The launch comes amid concerns over the use of untested technology, with analysts and investors closely watching Tesla's progress in the self-driving sector.
