Tesla has applied for a transportation permit in California to become a ridesharing service.
The permit would allow Tesla to offer ride-hailing services and compete with Uber, Lyft, and Waymo.
Tesla plans to launch driverless ride-hailing in Austin in June and expand to California by the end of the year.
While Tesla has approval for testing autonomous vehicles, it has not yet applied for a permit for driverless testing or deployment from the state's Department of Motor Vehicles.
