Tesla will begin pilot testing its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas by the end of June with a small fleet of 10 autonomous vehicles.
The service will use Model Y vehicles integrated with the latest Full Self-Driving software and operate without onboard human safety drivers in geofenced areas within Austin.
If successful, Tesla plans to scale operations by potentially putting up to 1,000 vehicles on the road within a few months.
Elon Musk confirmed plans to expand the service to Los Angeles and San Francisco after the Austin trial, relying on artificial intelligence and camera systems for autonomy.
