Tesla is set to launch its driverless ride-hailing service in Austin, Texas on June 12, marking a shift towards self-driving taxis and artificial intelligence.
The initial robotaxi fleet will consist of self-driving Model Y cars, with plans to gradually increase the fleet size to 1,000 cars over a few months and expand to other cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.
In the future, Tesla will transition from using Model Y to a custom-built autonomous vehicle called the Robotaxi/Cybercab, designed without a steering wheel or pedals for full autonomy.
While Tesla is not currently listed as a ride-hailing operator in Texas, the company is expected to have remote human operators to monitor the robotaxi service during its initial rollout phase.
