Tesla's first fully autonomous Model Y drove itself to its new owner in Texas, reaching speeds of 72 mph on the highway, according to a Tesla engineer.
Elon Musk announced the accomplishment, highlighting that it was a fully autonomous delivery with no people in the car or remote operators controlling it.
While Musk's claim of being the first self-driving car on a highway isn't entirely accurate, this achievement is significant for Tesla, given the delays in launching Full Self-Driving technology.
Waymo autonomous cars also have plans for freeway testing, and self-driving freight trucks from Aurora have been operating in Texas, including on highways with similar speed limits.
