Federal safety regulators have contacted Tesla following reports of Tesla robotaxis violating traffic laws in South Austin where the company is offering rides.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is in touch with Tesla after videos showed the robotaxis acting contrary to traffic regulations.
NHTSA stated that it is gathering more information from the manufacturer and will enforce the law on all motor vehicle makers.
Tesla began providing paid rides to invited customers in South Austin using its autonomous technology, Full Self-Driving Supervised software.
The Full Self-Driving Supervised software requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel, acting as an advanced driver assistance system.
Tesla robotaxis operate with an unsupervised version of the Full Self-Driving software, allowing them to drive autonomously.
Videos online depict Tesla robotaxis exceeding speed limits and veering into the wrong lane, raising safety concerns.
One video shows a Tesla robotaxi abruptly braking near police vehicles without apparent reason, as observed by Ed Niedermeyer in Austin.
