The US President Donald Trump has announced a 25 percent tariff on all cars and parts not built in the United States in an effort to eliminate the threat to national security.
JDM imports under the 25-year rule will now be subjected to a 27.5 percent import tax, while minitrucks and vans will face a 50 percent fee due to the existing 25-percent Chicken Tax.
There may be exceptions to the tariffs, as the Secretary of Commerce has the authority to recommend the removal of the 25-percent tariff if it is determined that the vehicles do not pose a threat to national security.
The tariffs are set to take effect on April 2, with uncertainty surrounding what will happen thereafter.
