The Art Basel Miami Beach brought together galleries from across the world and presented thousands of contemporary artworks in the 2024 edition and these six sculptures stole the show. The sculptures had the power of catching people's attention while also providing glimpses of the colors, people, and buzz of the fair around them.
Maurizio Cattelan's Untitled (elevator), 2001, displayed by Marian Goodman Gallery is an exceptionally detailed pair of mouse-sized elevators with doors that occasionally open with the familiar elevator ding. Jeremy Shaw's Towards Universal Pattern Recognition is a hypnotic work created from original archive press photographs framed in custom-cut prismatic lenses.
Olafur Eliasson's The Self-conscious Orbital Force, 2023, shown at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is made from dozens of partially silvered solid glass spheres that gave the illusion of an upside-down mirrored view of it’s environment within each orb. Tara Donovan's Stratagem XVI, 2024, presented by Pace Gallery, is a single work towering 84-inches tall made from countless pairs of CDs glued face-to-face.
Miles McEnery Gallery exhibited several new kite-based wall sculptures by Jacob Hashimoto named The Cosmic Whirlwind of Past Faults and The Undoing of Light composed of cloud-like forms and black and white circles.
Jack Shainman Gallery's new sculpture, Community, by Hank Willis Thomas created from mirror-polished stainless steel represents seven hands that link at the wrists in mutual support. It serves as a portal to whatever's on the other side and a symbol of community.
The artworks are admired for their physical and weightless composition, an opposing gravitational quality. Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 brought exceptional artwork that sustained energy and curiosity; the next edition is scheduled for December 5-7, 2025.
