Engineers from RMIT University in Australia have invented a protective coating for concrete pipes to reduce fatbergs in sewers. The zinc-enhanced polyurethane coating reduces the release of calcium from concrete blocks, reducing fat, oil, and grease (FOG) buildup. In lab tests, the coating reduced FOG buildup on concrete by 30% compared to non-coated concrete. The coating is stable in water, can withstand high temperatures, and is self-healing, extending its lifespan.
