The New York Times has approved the use of AI in its newsroom, allowing journalists and editorial staff to utilize AI tools for various tasks.
AI can be used for activities such as writing headlines, drafting interview questions, suggesting edits, generating article summaries, brainstorming ideas, analyzing documents and photos, and developing news quizzes.
However, AI cannot be used to draft or significantly revise articles, bypass paywalls, or generate images or videos for publication without labeling.
The Times aims to enhance accessibility and internal workflows with AI features like digitally voiced articles, translations, and an in-house AI model called Echo.
