Tip baiting, hackers, and new laws: How gig work for Uber, Instacart, and other apps changed in 2024

  • Workers struggled with having their gig work accounts deactivated in some cases, whilst others simply started their own businesses outright.
  • New York and Seattle introduced new pay laws for gig workers in their areas.
  • Delivery services fought back with DoorDash adding a $1.99 fee to offset new city laws in New York and Instacart sending workers on longer routes to pay them more in Seattle.
  • Gig work is not just limited to rideshare and food delivery – gig apps have now expanded to nursing jobs in hospitals and care homes.
