Travis Kalanick, former Uber founder, is interested in buying the U.S. arm of autonomous vehicle company Pony AI with potential help from Uber.
Pony AI, with a market cap of $4.5 billion, started preparations for a U.S. arm sale or spinoff by creating a 'forked' version of its source code.
Acquiring Pony AI would reimmerse Kalanick in self-driving technology after his departure from Uber in 2017, which later sold its self-driving division to Aurora.
Kalanick, focusing on robotics with his company CloudKitchens, mentioned that Uber was close to market leader Waymo in autonomous technology at the time of his exit.
