The National Treasury and international donors are providing financial support to South Africa's HIV response to make up for funding cuts from the US government.
Treasury has agreed to release approximately R753 million immediately to address the shortfall in HIV funding due to the US government's withdrawal.
The allocated funds will go towards HIV services, medicines, research, and specific programs like the District Health Programme Grant and the Central Chronic Medicine Dispensing and Distribution Programme.
UNAIDS warns that the sudden withdrawal of US funding could lead to a resurgence in HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths in low- and middle-income countries, with potential devastating effects by 2030.
