President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring English the official language of the United States.
The executive order does not change employment law, and English-only workplace policies can still be discriminatory under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
There are limited circumstances where employers can legally enforce English-only rules, such as for safety concerns, customer service, efficiency in teamwork, and supervision requirements.
State laws, such as in New York and New Jersey, have additional limitations against English-only workplace policies.
