President Donald Trump’s administration has exempted smartphones, computers, hard drives, and computer processors and memory chips from reciprocal tariffs.
The exclusions are expected to benefit electronics giants such as Apple and Samsung and to cushion consumers from price increases.
The exemption does not indicate a permanent reprieve as the products may eventually face different tariffs, although likely lower ones for China.
It is important to note that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. could be particularly affected, as they have made a significant investment in the U.S. and are reliant on machine imports for semiconductor production.
