The Engineering Export Promotion Council of India has raised concerns about Trump's proposed 50% tariff hike on steel, aluminium, and related products, which could impact India's $5 billion engineering exports to the US.
India currently exports around $5 billion worth of steel, aluminium, and related products to the US annually, with these metals and their derivatives accounting for almost a quarter of the country’s total engineering shipments to the US.
The existing 25% tariff on steel imports by the US has already made the market challenging for Indian exporters, intensifying global competition and disrupting trade flows.
Chairman of EEPC India, Pankaj Chadha, has urged India to seek an exemption from the proposed tariff hike during the ongoing Bilateral Trade Agreement negotiations, as the move could jeopardize engineering exports worth $5 billion.
