Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is investing an additional $100 billion in semiconductor manufacturing in the US. The company's total planned investment will now be $165 billion, making it the largest single foreign direct investment in US history.
TSMC's expanded investment includes the construction of three more fabrication plants, two advanced packaging facilities, and a major research and development center. The new facilities will create tens of thousands of high-paying, high-tech jobs in advanced chip manufacturing and R&D.
The investment comes after TSMC was announced as a recipient of $6.6 billion in grants under the Biden administration's CHIPS Act. TSMC's facilities in Arizona will manufacture chips for companies like Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, Broadcom, and Qualcomm.
The decision to invest more in the US was reportedly influenced by President Donald Trump's threat to impose new tariffs on chip imports. TSMC's expanded investment is expected to lead to 40,000 construction jobs in the next four years.
