UK carmakers are on track to meet electric car sales targets despite successfully lobbying the government to soften them.
In the first half of 2025, electric car sales accounted for 21.6%, just below the required 22.06% after concessions, per New AutoMotive analysis.
The UK government compromised on the zero-emission vehicle mandate, allowing flexibility to meet targets and face lower fines, benefitting individual carmakers like Nissan, Toyota, and JLR.
Despite progress, concerns remain over the pace of EV adoption, with challenges such as high costs, limited charging infrastructure, and the need for government incentives to drive private consumer demand.
