UK electric car sales surged by a third in the first half of 2025, with battery electric car sales rising 34.6% to 224,838 units, according to SMMT data.
New car sales in June 2025 increased by 6.8% year-on-year to 191,200 units, with nearly a quarter of the sales being electric vehicles.
Tesla's Model Y launch and Ford's growth contributed to the boost in UK electric car sales. However, the industry continues to face challenges due to the cost of living crisis and US tariffs.
Despite facing difficulties, UK car sales have been on the rise, with electric car sales making up 21.6% of all sales so far in 2025. Electric van sales also saw a significant increase, rising by 50% in the first half of the year.
