The UK government, supported by a grant from Meta, is launching a program to accelerate AI adoption by establishing up to 10 AI fellowships through the Alan Turing Institute.
The AI fellows will work on public sector challenges such as translating documents, streamlining planning applications, and improving emergency responses, focusing on open-source AI models to reduce licensing costs.
The program aims to enhance government efficiency, national security, and critical infrastructure. Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer highlighted the potential of open-source AI to transform public services.
This initiative complements existing government efforts to increase AI uptake, including successful projects like 'Caddy,' an AI tool developed with Citizens Advice, and a recent tech support deal with Google.
