Jakob+MacFarlane has transformed a dated 1980s library into a futuristic civic icon, retaining its past while symbolizing renewal for Avignon, France.
The Madeleine Renaud and Jean-Louis Barrault Library, now known as The Canopy, is part of the Nouveau Programme National de Renouvellement Urbain (NPNRU), positioning itself as the gateway to a revitalized Avignon.
The design concept by Jakob+MacFarlane uses a tree metaphor, featuring a central staircase resembling a rising trunk and a new cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof functioning as a literal canopy with embedded solar panels, providing shade and sustainable energy.
The renovated library embraces the evolving functions of public libraries, offering spaces for digital interfaces, as well as adaptable reading areas and an adjoining auditorium for hosting various cultural events.
