Cases of acute myocarditis—a rare but potentially life-threatening heart condition—are being reported more frequently in children across the region.
Acute myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, often caused by viral infections, bacterial infections, or autoimmune disorders.
Symptoms of acute myocarditis in children include cough or cold symptoms, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, fever, pale or cool skin, irritability, and rapid or irregular heartbeat.
Early detection and treatment of acute myocarditis are crucial. Diagnosis can be challenging, but advanced imaging techniques like Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMR) and blood tests can help. Treatment often involves supportive care in an ICU, medication to improve heart function, and in severe cases, intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
