The Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) is using an underwater drone, SuBastian, to explore the depths surrounding Antarctica, an area inaccessible to human divers and standard research vessels.
SuBastian, equipped with high-tech features like 4K cameras and robotic arms, operates in extreme conditions, allowing for detailed exploration up to 4,000 meters deep in frigid Antarctic waters.
The drone has conducted successful missions, discovering diverse sea life beneath thick ice shelves, exploring newly exposed seafloors after iceberg calving events, and even capturing the first confirmed footage of a juvenile colossal squid in the wild.
The team plans to continue using SuBastian to further explore Antarctica's waters, emphasizing the importance of underwater drones in expanding scientific knowledge and tracking changes in marine environments.
