Volkswagen will be replacing the first-generation Amarok with a new ute 'from South America, for South America'.
The new ute will be based on the Maxus Interstellar X from Chinese manufacturer SAIC Motor, also known as LDV Terron 9 and MG U9.
Volkswagen is investing US$580 million in production technology and infrastructure for the new ute, which is specifically developed for the South American market.
The new ute's platform can support traditional combustion, hybrid, and electric powertrains.
