updates: employee chews tobacco at his desk, old school’s awful mentoring program, and more

  • An employee has stopped using tobacco at work after being told that it is not allowed on company property, a manager using the advice given by the blog. The employee is always asking how he can get further in the company without truly appearing interested in developing in his role.
  • A family friend reached out to the writer for career advice, and despite an early mishap with the wrong phone number, the writer continued to offer advice to the family friend's son. The chance encounter led to the writer forging her own path, eventually co-authoring a book with the founder of a college grad program and launching a company to advance social justice and care/support around the world.
  • One reader of the blog found that an old high school mentorship program still had issues reaching out to its alumni. The program still had the same tags, didn't appear to personalize its requests, and sent out a lot of unwanted alarms. While the program is still struggling, the writer did not want to penalize kids who helped because they may want to become mentors.
  • A workplace problem with a co-worker who talked about his religion all the time resolved itself after the co-worker left the company on his own. The writer didn't have to worry about the issue any longer.
  • A writer of the blog who had a problem with colleagues missing scheduled meetings and not providing necessary information was working in a dysfunctional organization that made it difficult to change things for the better despite the millions of dollars that were put on the line for projects that helped students and the underserved community.
