The National Institute of Standards and Technology is looking to fire as many as 500 staffers, including those from the US AI Safety Institute (AISI) and Chips for America, both part of NIST.
The reported layoffs, particularly targeting probationary employees, pose a threat to the fledgling AI safety organization.
AISI's future was already uncertain as it was created last year under President Joe Biden's executive order on AI safety, which was later repealed by President Donald Trump, and its director recently departed.
AI safety and policy organizations criticized the reported layoffs citing the severe impact on the government's capacity to research and address critical AI safety concerns.
