The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on individuals and organizations associated with North Korean IT worker activities targeting American crypto firms.
North Korean hackers have shifted tactics from direct hacking to placing fraudulent employees in Western businesses through fake job offers to steal identities and funds.
Sanctioned individuals include North Korean citizen Song Kum Hyok, accused of stealing American identities, and Russian national Gayk Asatryan for hiring North Korean IT workers.
These sanctions aim to disrupt North Korea's cyber warfare strategies, with TRM Labs reporting that North Korean state-backed cyber criminals have stolen $1.6 billion in digital assets in early 2025, leading US authorities to crack down on such fraudulent activities.
