U.S. Rep. Katherine Cammack introduces the App Store Freedom Act aimed at promoting competition and protecting consumers and developers in the mobile app marketplace.
The bill requires large app store operators to allow users to set third-party apps or app stores as default, install apps outside the dominant platform, and provide equal access to developers without discrimination.
The bill also prohibits app stores from mandating the use of in-app payment systems by developers, imposing pricing parity requirements, and penalizing developers for app distribution elsewhere.
The proposed legislation aims to create a fair and competitive mobile app marketplace, providing more choice to consumers and empowering developers, as supported by Spotify and the Coalition for App Fairness.
