The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has established a new unit called the Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit (CETU) to combat fraud in the crypto and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors.
The CETU will focus on areas such as fraud utilizing AI and machine learning, investigating schemes involving social media platforms, the dark web, and deceptive websites, hacking incidents, fraudulent practices involving blockchain technology and crypto assets, and ensuring compliance with existing cybersecurity rules.
The SEC's previous Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit has been replaced by the CETU and will be led by Laura D'Allaird.
The establishment of the CETU is part of the SEC's proactive approach to enhance oversight of the crypto and AI sectors, aiming to protect investors and promote capital formation and market efficiency.
