Vancouver's Mayor Ken Sim is a Bitcoin enthusiast working to make Vancouver a more Bitcoin-friendly city, advocating for the development of a strategic bitcoin reserve. He believes that, in a perfect world, Vancouver would allow people to transact with bitcoin without triggering capital gains tax events and accept payments in the form of bitcoin. According to Mayor Sim, Bitcoin adoption in Vancouver would lead to an immutable record and add a level of transparency never seen in history. He believes that Bitcoin adoption would bring financial hope to citizens at a time when many are struggling financially.
Mayor Sim “showers people with love and then hits them with facts” to educate them about Bitcoin, particularly as many believe that Bitcoin is bad for the environment. Mayor Sim believes the opposite is the case and that Bitcoin can help save the environment. Bitcoin incentivizes organizations to capture the natural gas, repurpose it for Bitcoin mining and build alternative or green energy projects, which would otherwise be uneconomic. Moreover, Bitcoin mining provides a guaranteed customer in the form of Bitcoin miners, and it would be net positive for the environment.
Mayor Sim believes that Bitcoin is the greatest invention in human history, and it could change how humans interact with each other and how nation states evolve. The fiat currency is broken, and Bitcoin provides hope that could set up Vancouver's future prosperity for the next hundred years. As Bitcoin is difficult to use technically, he believes that the Bitcoin community needs to start pumping the true narrative of why bitcoin is a sound financial asset and getting the education out there.
Mayor Sim does not see the Vancouver city government educating its residents on Bitcoin but believes that Bitcoin supporters need to push the narrative with elected officials to get them to see the value. Mayor Sim says that Vancouver could transform into a pro-Bitcoin city relatively quickly if people come onboard and see how Bitcoin can reduce some of the financial stress in their lives.
