Volvo has unveiled a new multi-adaptive safety belt that is a redesign of the traditional three-point seat belt, with smarter technology that adapts to the individual it is protecting and the type of crash the car is involved in.
The new safety belt features an upgraded load-limiter with more settings, using data from the car's sensors to adjust the tension based on factors like the passenger's body posture, direction, and speed of the car.
Calibrated using data from Volvo's database of 80,000 people involved in real-world crashes over the past 50 years, the multi-adaptive seat belt system can be updated via over-the-air updates as more data is collected to fine-tune settings.
The first car to incorporate this new safety belt will be Volvo's next year EX60 all-electric SUV, marking a significant upgrade to the traditional three-point safety belt invented by Volvo in 1959 which is estimated to have saved over a million lives.
