Russia intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s capital, firing drones and missiles overnight after a sustained barrage on Kyiv that was one of the most extended in the four-year war.
The airstrikes followed the second stage of a major prisoner of war swap, with 307 prisoners on each side exchanged near Ukraine’s border with Belarus.
Kyiv faced the most massive air attack so far in the war, leading to injuries and damage to residential buildings. Ukrainian air defenses were deployed as the city was targeted multiple times.
Russian forces targeted various locations in Ukraine, including missile production facilities and a US-made Patriot anti-aircraft missile system position. Despite the airstrikes, a prisoner swap agreed in Istanbul proceeded as planned.
