Warner Bros. Discovery announced that its streaming service, currently named Max, will revert to its previous name, HBO Max, starting this summer.
The rebranding decision comes after Warner Bros. Discovery first launched HBO Max in 2020 under AT&T ownership, aiming to offer a wide range of content including reality TV, documentaries, kids programming, movies, and HBO titles.
Following the merger of Discovery Communications and WarnerMedia and the divestment from AT&T in 2022, the service was renamed to Max in 2023 to incorporate content from Discovery+. However, Warner Bros. Discovery has now decided to go back to the HBO Max branding.
Critics have commented on the various naming conventions used by both HBO and Apple, with MacDailyNews highlighting confusion surrounding the branding efforts of HBO and Apple products.
