Water Level In Mumbai Lakes Crosses Halfway Mark; Almost 6 Times More Than Last Year

  • The water levels in Mumbai's seven supply lakes have crossed the 50% mark, containing almost 6 times more water than last year. The lakes can collectively hold 14,47,363 million litres of usable water.
  • The current water levels in the lakes stand at 50.75% of their combined capacity, with significant increases seen over the past 24 hours due to heavy rainfall. The levels are expected to rise further with continued rainfall predicted by the IMD.
  • The lakes dependent on monsoon rainfall for replenishment include Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar, and Tulsi, spread across Mumbai, Thane, and Nashik districts. Upper Vaitarna has the highest capacity at 66.38%.
  • IMD forecasts very heavy rainfall in Mumbai till July 7, with the city and Thane on yellow alert. The weather prediction indicates moderate to heavy rainfall for the next several days, contributing to the rising water levels in Mumbai's lakes.
