A Waymo self-driving robotaxi was spotted being pulled over by traffic police in Tokyo, Waymo's first offshore market for testing and data collection.
The image of the robotaxi stopped on the side of the road while a traffic cop on a motorcycle prepared a ticket garnered over 1 million impressions on social media.
Waymo's robotaxi rollout in Tokyo began in April, operated manually by drivers from Nihon Kotsu, with a focus on central Tokyo to gather data for adapting the self-driving system.
Despite the humorous incident, Waymo's self-driving system has shown significant potential for road safety with reductions in pedestrian injury crashes and crashes with cyclists and motorcyclists.
