Waymo, the self-driving arm of Google’s parent company Alphabet, plans to bring its robotaxis to Tokyo, Japan in early 2025.
The self-driving vehicles, operated manually initially, will be used to map out areas of Tokyo in partnership with Nihon Kotsu, the city's largest taxi company.
Waymo is working closely with Nihon Kotsu to train the team on operating the autonomous vehicles and adapting to left-hand traffic.
This expansion aligns with Japan's vision for the future of transportation and collaboration with local officials is underway to ensure a responsible implementation.
