Waymo recalled 1,212 robotaxis to address risks of collisions with chains, gates, and other roadway barriers, resolving the issue with a software update.
The recall, initiated after 16 collisions with barriers between 2022 and late 2024, did not impact current operations of the company's 1,500+ vehicles across several cities.
The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had opened a probe into the issue last year, with no reported injuries from the incidents.
Waymo, known for its robotaxi services, is promoting safety with rapid expansion plans into new cities and partnerships, including recent collaborations with Toyota.
