The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) has unveiled its Industry Report 2025, showing a significant uptick in investment in its OpenRoaming platform.
81% of respondents to its annual industry survey put in place plans to deploy the technology, 25% of which were already doing so, while 42% said they would deploy in 2025, with 27% planning for 2026.
Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi HaLow are also seeing strong adoption, with 19% stating they had deployed the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard, and 17% had done the same for Wi-Fi HaLow.
Wi-Fi still faces challenges in universal adoption for seamless mobility and security. Cellular networks, bolstered by the global 5G rollout, maintain an edge in ubiquitous coverage and high-speed connectivity.
Despite challenges in Wi-Fi ecosystem, the comfort of investing in Wi-Fi over cellular networks is increasing due to cost-effectiveness and new standards delivering high performance.
According to respondents, transportation hubs are expected to be the biggest area of traffic growth for Wi-Fi. In this regard, 47% suggested that such venues are expected to see the greatest growth in traffic in the next year.
The report also highlights 37% of respondents had deployed Wi-Fi 6E, while some 20% said they had deployed CBRS. Meanwhile, 5G scored 37% by this same measure.
