Honda's E-Clutch system is a servo-actuated clutch mechanism, mated to a conventional gearbox and standard multi-plate motorcycle clutch.
Available in Malaysia with the newly launched 2025 Honda CB650R naked sports and CBR650R sportsbike, the E-Clutch is designed to make life easier for riders.
The E-Clutch is controlled by a motor control unit (MCU) and can be customised to suit individual riding styles.
It operates like a very well adjusted up-and-down quickshifter but does not require rev matching or attention to engine and road speed.
The E-Clutch can be completely disengaged, and if the system fails, it will default to manual mode.
The system is not a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) gearbox or rotary gearbox with centrifugal clutch or automatic gearbox.
The E-Clutch makes it easier for new riders or riders who are coming back to riding after a very long break to operate the motorcycle without worrying about stalling or fumbling a gear change.
It can half-clutch to reduce shock while downshifting, making gear changes quicker and smoother, and avoids aggressive clutch operation, avoiding stalling or tipping over the motorcycle when starting or stopping.
The E-Clutch takes a little getting used to but most riders would fall into the habit of not using the clutch after about an hour or so.
Wheelie merchants take note: the E-Clutch will not allow wheelies or rear-wheel slides, and the traction control on the CB650R and CBR650R is quite aggressive, discouraging any two-wheel hooliganism.
