Meta’s Threads app is a text-based Twitter rival that has more than 275m monthly active users and is tied to Instagram. Because you are logging in through your Instagram account, you will be able to follow all the people that you already follow. Limitations include 500 characters in one post, no DMs, and no third-party clients. Meta’s newest social network has Starter Packs and an API, recently launched in 2024, with tools to publish posts of users and retrieve their own posts. Meta extended fediverse support by adding featured users from other servers and launched Threads in the EU in December 2023.
Threads is Meta’s Twitter rival and Meta has pulled over key features from rival Bluesky, such as making its own version of Starter Packs lists of people to follow based on different themes.
Threads is available on iOS and Android in over 100 countries and it has no paid tiers nor ads, but your verification mark from Instagram is carried over — even if you have paid for Meta Verified.
There are currently no long videos, direct messages, or live audio rooms on Threads so it is limited in comparison to Twitter.
Threads allows you to pin search terms and tags as feeds but is missing features like scheduling posts, support for lists, and third-party clients.
Meta data practices are similar to Instagram and the app collects whatever info (including the categories of data listed in the App Store) you share in the app, according to Meta’s deputy chief privacy officer.
Threads API was launched publicly in June 2024 and it lets developers build tools to publish posts of users and retrieve users’ own posts and get insights about their engagement. They can’t yet help you delete your posts.
Threads has previously not been available in the EU until December 2023 due to privacy concerns.
As of November 2024, Threads has over 275 million monthly active users and has been steady ramping up its sign-ups since its initial launch as it crossed the mark of 10 million signups within hours of launch.
Meta’s Threads app tech has extended its fediverse support by adding featured users from other servers and launched Threads in the EU in December 2023 with an option for users to route their traffic.
