A study was conducted to analyze the hiring patterns and tenures of NBA coaches, aiming to determine the impact of coaching background on success.Data collected from 1990 to 2021 revealed that NBA teams often re-hire coaches with prior head coaching experience. An emphasis on internal candidates was observed, with 13.6% of hires being internal, including successful coaches like Popovich and Spoelstra. The median tenure for NBA coaches is 2.5 seasons, with only 10% lasting more than 5 seasons.A logistic regression analysis showed no significant difference in success rates based on coaching backgrounds.Despite indications that previous head coaches tend to last longer, statistical tests did not confirm a bias towards hiring them.Internal hires were found to be 77% less likely to be successful compared to external hires. The limited sample size of successful coaches might have influenced the lack of statistical significance in the analysis.Overall, the analysis debunks the notion that internal hires or previous head coaching experience guarantee coaching success in the NBA.Short coaching tenures and a preference for experienced head coaches were prominent findings in the study.
