Tesla has been granted a transportation charter permit (TCP) by the California Public Utilities Commission, allowing the company to operate a private transportation service.
This permit is different from the permits held by Uber and Lyft and only enables Tesla to offer prearranged transportation services using its own vehicles and employees as drivers.
The permit does not cover autonomous vehicle testing or deployment, and Tesla needs additional permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles for such operations.
Tesla plans to initially use the TCP permit for transporting its employees and will notify the CPUC when it transitions to transporting the public.
