WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, has reported an average of 46.8 million monthly active users for its open channels under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA).
The European Commission has stated that WhatsApp's user numbers exceed the threshold for classification as a Very Large Online Platform under the DSA.
The DSA imposes stricter rules on very large online platforms, requiring risk assessments and mitigation strategies for illegal or harmful content.
Telegram also confirmed that its monthly EU users of public channels are significantly fewer than 45 million.
