WhatsApp is adding ads to the Status screen

  • WhatsApp will start showing ads on the Status screen resembling Instagram's Stories.
  • Ads will be shown based on users' country, city, language, and channels they follow, using non-personally identifiable data.
  • Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, clarified that personally identifiable data like phone numbers won't be used for targeted ads.
  • Companies and users can promote their Channels in the discovery section, and select creators and businesses can offer subscription-based exclusive updates.
  • Meta mentioned that over 1.5 billion people use Status and Channels per day.
  • WhatsApp has previously earned revenue through WhatsApp Business and click-to-WhatsApp ads.
  • The company noted that new ad features are the next step in enhancing revenue streams.
  • Alice Newton Rex, VP of product at WhatsApp, mentioned that the ads are a natural evolution for the platform.
  • WhatsApp announced that ads and new features will be introduced globally in the following months.
