WhatsApp will start showing ads on the Status screen resembling Instagram's Stories.
Ads will be shown based on users' country, city, language, and channels they follow, using non-personally identifiable data.
Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, clarified that personally identifiable data like phone numbers won't be used for targeted ads.
Companies and users can promote their Channels in the discovery section, and select creators and businesses can offer subscription-based exclusive updates.
Meta mentioned that over 1.5 billion people use Status and Channels per day.
WhatsApp has previously earned revenue through WhatsApp Business and click-to-WhatsApp ads.
The company noted that new ad features are the next step in enhancing revenue streams.
Alice Newton Rex, VP of product at WhatsApp, mentioned that the ads are a natural evolution for the platform.
WhatsApp announced that ads and new features will be introduced globally in the following months.
