UK residents have been warned to expect fake texts and emails from scammers over the Christmas period impersonating Amazon, DHL, Evri, Royal Mail and UPS.
Home delivery is reportedly the second-most-abused sector for copycat websites, with more than 50,000 reports of home delivery companies being impersonated in the past 12 months.
USPS, Amazon, DHL, Royal Mail, Evri and UPS are the top six brands impersonated by scammers targeting the UK.
Mobile network Three UK reported a 500% rise in scam activity in December 2023, compared with the monthly average from August to October.
Most scammers work by directing their targets to fake home delivery websites by using fake text messages and emails that claim a missed delivery needs to be rearranged.
If you receive any text message or email that looks suspicious, delete it immediately and report it to your mobile network provider or email service feedback system as appropriate.
Delivery companies including Amazon, DHL, Royal Mail, Evri, UPS and InPost said they work to identify and eliminate scams, urging customers to stay alert for bogus messages.
If you believe you have been scammed, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud or Police Scotland. You should also stay vigilant for potential further attacks.
Never respond to suspicious messages, click on links or provide personal information, and verify any potential fake messages with the company or organisation the messages originate from before making any response.
Check for spam filters and call blocking systems in your phone’s security settings to better protect against unwanted messages and calls.
