The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency, three years after it was first announced as such.
The virus will continue to be a public health threat and have a pandemic status like HIV.
WHO director general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that the virus is here to stay and new variants may emerge, causing new surges in cases and deaths.
Countries are urged to transition from emergency mode to managing Covid-19 alongside other infectious diseases and take structured long-term strategies in public health.
