The Wikimedia Foundation has announced a three-year strategy focusing on how AI will support Wikipedia contributors while maintaining a human-led editorial model.
AI will be used as a tool to assist with routine and technical tasks, not as a substitute for human judgment in editing.
The strategy emphasizes four areas: supporting moderators and patrollers, improving information retrieval and translation, assisting editors in underrepresented languages, and facilitating onboarding of new editors through AI-driven guidance.
The Foundation prioritizes open-source AI models and acknowledges trade-offs in its approach, focusing initially on content integrity and applying AI in high-impact areas to combat low-quality content and disinformation online.
