Microsoft has introduced a wizard to assist Windows 10 users in staying secure as Windows 10 support ends on October 14 this year.
The wizard is part of Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program providing security patches for one year after official support ends.
Windows 10 users have three options via the wizard to continue receiving updates: use Windows Backup, redeem Microsoft Rewards points, or pay a one-time fee of $30.
Personal computer ESU coverage lasts from October 15, 2025, until October 13, 2026, after enrolling through the wizard.
The enrollment wizard is currently available in the Windows Insider Program and will roll out to a wider user base in mid-August.
Commercial organizations can subscribe to the ESU program for $61 per device annually for up to three years, with costs increasing each year.
Businesses can sign up through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Program, with Cloud Service Providers offering enrollment from September 1.
Windows 10 devices accessing Windows 11 Cloud PCs via Windows 365 and virtual machines will receive ESU access and security updates automatically.
Microsoft aims to encourage users to upgrade to Windows 11 as Windows 10 nears its end, despite some users and organizations delaying the switch.
For mission-critical devices and large computer fleets, upgrading to Windows 11 might be challenging, but staying up-to-date is essential for security.
