The $10 million Rainforest XPrize was awarded to the winning team, Limelight Rainforest, for using drones to study rainforest biodiversity.
Colorado Mesa University Professor of Biology, Thomas Walla, headed the winning team.
The team used a platform called the Limelight, equipped with sensors and cameras, which was placed within the rainforest canopy by a drone to collect comprehensive data.
By using drones and technology, Professor Walla envisions indigenous people having the tools to present corporations with biodiversity data, highlighting the economic benefits of preserving rainforests.
