Workbrew, a startup founded by former GitHub executives, aims to bring the benefits of Homebrew, an open-source package manager, to the enterprise.
The platform helps companies to mitigate the risks of shadow IT by enabling admins and security teams to gain centralised visibility and control over Homebrew's deployments.
Workbrew provides a free plan with no user or device restrictions, and offers a pro plan for $10/month, which includes features such as policy enforcement and advanced security tooling.
The enterprise plan is available with custom pricing and offers an added layer of security and compliance features, such as support for single sign on (SSO).
The startup has received $5m in funding from Heavybit, Essence VC, Operator Collective and a range of angel investors, including Tom Preston-Werner, co-founder and ex-CEO of GitHub.
Workbrew brings enterprise-level rigour and support to Homebrew deployments, by offering special integrations with mobile device management (MDM) software such as Jamf, Kandji, Fleet and SimpleMDM.
Workbrew is designed to allow companies to enforce access control for packages, from those freely available to all to those subject to formal approval processes.
Workbrew emerged from stealth mode in August 2021, and already has around 20 customers, including Emburse and Vespa.
With $5m in new funding, Workbrew said it plans to scale its platform and build further integrations with MDM software and more developer-focused features.
The continued support of the open-source Homebrew project is critical for the success of Workbrew.
